This book is inhabited by the encounters of and with Soulages. The artist's encounters forever marked his vision of art: first with archaeology and cave art, then with Conques (France) and Romanesque art, and finally with abstraction during the Second World War. His major encounters in the 1950s and 1960s, with Picabia, Hartung, Atlan, Senghor, then around Conques with Georges Duby and Jacques Le Goff, are also key moments in his work, as is his encounter with Japan.
Michaël de Saint-Cheron and Matthieu Séguéla trace a golden triangle between Soulages' art, black Africa and the land of the rising sun. This book analyses “outrenoir" through an innovative double approach confronted with the history of the 20th century and the dialogue between cultures and the arts.
